Work Placement at the Refugee Council, October – December
Naoufal and Vishal spent 10 weeks at the Refugee Council in Birmingham.
During our time we did a varied amount of work, from shadowing people to organizing a CAD at Stone Road Initial Accommodation for asylum seekers.
- For the first two weeks we primarily did work shadowing whereby we sat along with project workers and clients and observed the work that was undertaken. Although not particularly ‘hands-on’ this was still important for us so as to understand the asylum system which is very intricate and complicated. This was also extremely interesting.
- Cultural-Awareness sessions. This involved going to schools with Nick Clark our work supervisor, and talking about the work at the Refugee Councils with teachers from the schools and doing activities highlighting cultural issues.
- General administration work including managing reception and calls from clients. Although generic, this was helpful as we were the front line for clients and interacted with them directly.
- English language lessons at Stone Road in the evenings.
- Painting sessions with children at Stone Road. We helped children paint to get them involved in creative activities and then used the artwork for our CAD there.
- The biggest task we did was organizing and arranging a CAD at Stone Road Initial Accommodation. We organized rotas for the work, getting the paints, designs organizing the work on the actual day. The event was extremely successful.
Client feedback forms and talking with clients to find out their needs.
