    Global Xchange

    21/10/2008 15:46

    Global Xchange

    Brief Overview

Global Xchange is a partnership programme managed and delivered by the British Council (BC) and Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), and a number of local partners around the world. We are committed to the idea that international volunteer exchanges can develop active global citizens who value volunteering, diversity, community development and social action and through these, take an active role in the fight against poverty and inequality.

The Programme blends the unique contribution of all of the organisations involved to achieve this aim – the British Council through cultural relations and project management expertise; and VSO through international development, programme theme expertise and international volunteering. Global Xchange local partners bring an understanding of community development and volunteering at the grass roots level and experience of working with young people through informal education approaches, techniques and methodologies. By working with local partners in this way we can ensure that the programme remains sustainable, works within the appropriate operating contexts and reflects the needs of local people and communities.

    Programme Mechanics

The Programme aims to change positively the lives of individuals and communities through cross-cultural, reciprocal and mutually beneficial international exchanges.
Global Xchange operates across the globe but offers dramatic local impact. Volunteers aged between the ages of 18 and 25 and from all walks of life can join the programme - providing that they can demonstrate flexibility as well as a commitment to working with others and engaging in experiential and reflective learning. Teams of 18 young people undertake the programme, with equal numbers from the UK and a partner country. The volunteers live and work in the host communities for up to three months in the UK and up to three months in the partner country.

Two Programme Supervisors, one from the UK and one from the partner country, develop, support and manage each exchange programme. Programme Supervisors facilitate the volunteer and community learning for the duration of the exchange. Community stakeholders, volunteer hosts, and Programme Supervisors have many opportunities during the programme and as part of the Monitoring and Evaluation process to reflect, share, document and learn from their experiences.

Vision & Aim of Global Xchange

    Vision

Helping to build a world where active global citizens create positive change and build mutual understanding and respect.

    Aim

Global Xchange defines active global citizens as:
"Individuals who learn from the experience of others around the world, have an awareness of issues facing developed and developing countries, and put that learning into action".

    Global Xchange Objectives

    Global Citizenship

Global Xchange will contribute to the development of active global citizens by ensuring that volunteers and stakeholders utilise skills, knowledge in:

    Volunteering
    Diversity
    Poverty and Inequality
    Community Development
    Social Action

    Volunteering

    Learning and Reflection

Global Xchange will provide opportunities for learning and reflection for volunteers, communities and stakeholders on a range of development and cross-cultural issues, as outlined in our Global Citizenship Learning Framework.

Global Xchange will ensure that all learning and reflection is based on and reports to the Monitoring and Evaluation framework
    Community Development

Global Xchange will contribute to sustainable community development through volunteering, and will ensure engagement of community stakeholders in the focus, design, implementation and evaluation of each exchange.

    Diversity

Global Xchange will represent the diversity of the countries, communities and partnerships with which we work. This will be reflected in all areas of selection attributed to the Global Xchange partnership and at all levels of the partnership both local and global.

    Arrival to Birmingham

Well after two days training in Chesthunt we went to Birmingham i had heard that Birmingham is the 2nd biggest city after London but really i didn't have the impression that it was going to be that big . What have impressed me in Birmingham is Diversity. I feel iam not in the Uk but i feel iam the a United Nations city because of the number of different communities and it is so diverse. i have visited different places and there are so many beautiful places to visit like the council house in Victoria Square is really amzing . the biggest mall in the Uk the Bullring ....etc. It is really Amazing to see how people share the same space and live in peace and respect despite their beliefs , backgrounds and colors. that was the positive side. Inother hands the rate of crimes is really high in Birmingham which sometimes make you feel unsafe since i came to the UK  i saw  2 people were arrested and one attempt  of a bank  robbery in Ballsal heath.

    The Community Welcome

    The Community Welcome

The Communty Welcome was amazing as well we had a chancae to meet with the Mayor of Birmingham who is from Pakistani origins which really shows how foreigners are well integrated in Birmingham. and  through this short article i want to show how the pakistani community is well integrated and the form of unity between all pakistani people. they are really successful and well integrated in the british community. During the event of the community welcome we had orgamized different activities : introducing ourselves in both languages English and Moroccan Arabic '' Darija'' . doing a show dance of a typical Moroccan dance from Central Morocco : Boujaad called '' Abidate Arma Dance'' . then there was a group of pakistani from the Zawiya which linked to the Moroccan Zawiya Boudchichiya . they sang spiritual songs about the Prophet PBUH. which really made me cry cause they were amazing. then the last session was a question and answer one in which people were really eager to know more about the Global Xchange program , VSO and Moroccan culture. it was a good experience and it was really great meeting the mayor and the other people who attended this activity..

    The MPR Experience In Shrophire

The MPR for me was a period of evaluation whether self-evaluation and team evaluation. Well to start with is to talk about the MPR experience at a typical British countryside, I liked the place very much it was lovely especially the lake. The house, the nature it is really a beautiful place even if it was a problem of phone network for some of us bus it wasn't a big deal to get out the stress of a big city like Birmingham . During the two days there were so many things going on The MPR for me was a period of evaluation whether self-evaluation and team evaluation. During the two days there were so many things going on within the team such as the contentious debate about the problems the team is facing and everyone is accusing the other it was really a tough time because we create big problems from small issues. I hope we could go over that soon and to be mature enough because it is our responsibility to make this program a success because we are giving 6 months from our life to learn something new that will help us in the future and to give help to those who are in need. In other hand there were good things such as both the British and the Moroccan dishes it was amazing to taste something Moroccan especially couscous after two months of sandwiches. I liked the games we played especially the Mafia one, Uno and ‘Bonjour Madame, Bonjour Monsieur’. So hope we can learn from this experience as much as we can and put hands in hands to deal with situations that we are going to face in the future.

    Refugee council Work

Work Placement at the Refugee Council, October – December

Naoufal and Vishal spent 10 weeks at the Refugee Council in Birmingham.

During our time we did a varied amount of work, from shadowing people to organizing a CAD at Stone Road Initial Accommodation for asylum seekers.

    • For the first two weeks we primarily did work shadowing whereby we sat along with project workers and clients and observed the work that was undertaken. Although not particularly ‘hands-on’ this was still important for us so as to understand the asylum system which is very intricate and complicated. This was also extremely interesting.
    • Cultural-Awareness sessions. This involved going to schools with Nick Clark our work supervisor, and talking about the work at the Refugee Councils with teachers from the schools and doing activities highlighting cultural issues.
    • General administration work including managing reception and calls from clients. Although generic, this was helpful as we were the front line for clients and interacted with them directly.
    • English language lessons at Stone Road in the evenings.
    • Painting sessions with children at Stone Road. We helped children paint to get them involved in creative activities and then used the artwork for our CAD there.
    • The biggest task we did was organizing and arranging a CAD at Stone Road Initial Accommodation. We organized rotas for the work, getting the paints, designs organizing the work on the actual day. The event was extremely successful.
Client feedback forms and talking with clients to find out their needs.
